Multi-User Dungeon, or MUD for short, was the first ever game of this genre. For many years, MUD, or British Legends as it was known to players, existed on the CompuServe Information Service. In the fall of 1999, however, CIS decided to terminate British Legends as part of their Y2K cleanup efforts. Many players thought that this meant the end of their beloved game.

That is not so. The present incarnation is a high-fidelity port of the original MUD code base to a modern server platform. This accurate reimplementation faithfully reproduces almost all the original's features, even some of the bugs that have become part of the game's lore.

This version of MUD/BL was written with the permission of the original copyright holder by Viktor T. Toth (aka Viktor the arch-wizard, formerly MrSpock the wizard) in a 'mad programming binge' (as MUD's original author, Richard Bartle called it) in December 1999, and has been in limited operation on a test site since. It was opened to the public in May, 2000.
