The following review is the opinion of the review's author [Wally]
and in no way represents the opinions of this website or its staff.
This is an RPI mud. Role-play is enforced, there are no levels or
classes. (With maybe one exception--being a mage.) It's sort of
'realistic' fantasy, not high-fantasy. There's not much 'gear' or
'treasure' or that sort of thing. There is perma-death (though with
some safeguards to ensure that 'homicidal maniac' PCs don't wipe
out half the playerbase without IC reason). There are OOC channels
(which you can turn off) and there's a command to help locate where
other PCs are in the game-world (which you can also turn off).
You can play a knight, a guard (called a 'Reeve'), a priest, a sort
of medieval-scientist, a heretic, an inquisitor, a member of a
despised race. A tailor or blacksmith or bard. A shady character or a
noble one. You can *definitely* leave your mark on the game-world.
This isn't a world that is set in stone, and unchangeable. PCs have
influence. You can create something new.
The game takes place on a rough island on the outskirts of an empire.
Mages are hated and feared, and hunted and burned. Heretics, likewise.
Other than that, there is conflict between law and crime, between
races, and even (increasingly) between lawful factions.
The best things so far, in my opinion:
1) A few of the players are amazing RPers. Amazing. 2) The staff is
very responsive, and almost always around. They're truly there to
help. 3) The world is designed to promote RP. It's compact: you
-will- find RP if you want. You will find conflict if you want. It's
all there.
The weakest things:
1) The economy. Crafting isn't fully implemented. If you love
playing a crafter, I'm not sure this is for you. (Yet: it's still in
Beta, and a very dedicated coder is constantly updating things!) 2)
The political system is a bit messy--but that's by design to give
players more input. 3) The world is small. That's a huge bonus on my
book, but if you want 4000 rooms to explore, this game isn't for you.
If, however, you want an intense RP experience in a world you can
influence--with some great players and supportive staff--give it a
chance. It's still in Beta, as I mentioned, but growing fast and
well.
Stop by. Log on. Let the staff (and 'Citizen' players, who are like
player-helpers) help you develop a character. Then jump in! There's a
lot to learn in this game, but the players are very friendly--they'll
help you fake it until you make it!
