The following review is the opinion of the review's author [Ecks]
and in no way represents the opinions of this website or its staff.
What can I say? Wormhole is a mud that nearly defies description,
instead being limited only by imagination. The areas are diverse in
theme and large in number, the classes and races allow players to be
any of a wide variety of combinations, and the mud is not simply
combat based, but has a fair number of puzzles as well that reward
the player with equipment and/or bragging rights.
The big draw of Wormhole is that it allows players to enter their
favorite sci-fi environments, such as the ship from Aliens, Babylon
5, and of course Star Wars and Star Trek themed areas, but it also
has a lot of areas based on original ideas as well. Players can
fight their favorite enemies be it GELFs, Daleks, Aliens, Klingons,
or even Ewoks. They can also make characters styled after specific
characters in movies and/or books: races include Ferengis,
Replicants, Borg, and Wookiee and some of the classes are Bounty
Hunter, Scanner, Space Marine, and of course Jedi and Sith classes.
Besides the areas, one of the reasons I've played over the years
(and was happy to hear that it is back up) is the remort system,
which allows players to go through the 110 levels up to five times -
the fifth only available to those that can pass a grueling test that
I've yet to see myself. Each time the player remorts, he or she gets
the ability to add innate effects, skills, powers, or raise
abilities; each remort adds more points that can be used for this
purpose. In addition to unlocking remort-only classes and skills,
remorting allows for a certain degree of customization of any
particular class, whether it is to enhance roleplaying or supplement
the inherent abilities of a class/race combination (in my present
case it means i'm an assassin that can effectively teleport to or
summon my targets ^.^ )
Okay, now the bad side: It's not a perfect mud. Some of the best
equipment can be difficult to get as it spawns only on reboot and is
often snatched up quickly. Areas can be a little difficult to
locate without directions at first, most of them being accessed by a
number of transporters around the space station that forms the home
of the players; almost anyone can give directions to the place a
player is trying to get to, but it can be difficult to find a
specific zone unless you have an idea of where to look (on the
bright side, the transporters mean that you can get to an area
without having to travel a long time to get there). Finally, the
player base is currently low, although the mud almost never has no
players on.
Thus, my review. I'd love to see more people come and join us, and
I think that Wormhole - although admittedly not for everyone,
since it is sci-fi based - is a mud worth playing.
