I joined this mud at the behest of a friend, and initially it was
relatively cool, had some good features and all. But the mud name i've
used for 13 years apparently didn't fit into anyone's idea of rp so i
was quickly denied without being told why.

So I tried with the other 2 names i've used. Quickly denied once
again. Then they are like 'Use the name generator.' Tried that 5
times. Denied all 5. Finally got a name to stick and the next day,
asked to change it.

Let's be honest folks, this mud isn't very newbie friendly, if you
decide to log on and give it a try, prepare to be denied a few times.
I wouldn't recommend this mud to anyone.

Look this is not what usually happens. If the name is badnamed
repeatedly people generally take the man aside and explain to him why
it is so. While I have no clue as to the specific case described by
this anonymous player, my guess is that person badnaming it felt that
the reason was totally obvious or it was one of those really rare
times when no mentor was online.

DE encourages RP, and is therefore, somewhat strict about its name
policy. Players are expected to pick an original medieval fantasy
name. Characters from books/TV and movies are not original and are not
permitted as are words that have a direct meaning in English or
combination of existing words. If someone comes up with a name like
that during creation, the is sent back into name creation and a
reminder of this policy is instantly displayed. There are ingame
helpfiles about this (including plenty of links to name generators).

Look, we are sorry this happened. It generally does not. The player
posting it himself says he liked the game until the disagreement over
his name. In the meantime, we are modifying the badname warning during
player creation to make is clearer to players. Contrary to the
impression that the incident might have left, we DO value players and
what they think. And heck, even the person posting the highly critical
entry says we have some cool features!:)

That's right. Every name he tried was illegal in one form or another.
As it states on the log in screen:

* Please choose a non-offensive an appropriate medieval name.
* Names that are found to be related to popular fiction will be
deleted.

Maybe I'm a name nazi, but I don't think names like Emanlanigiro
(Original name backwards), Shock, Longhorn and zillion are all that
original. But that's me, maybe other MUD admins have loser standards.

Of course, I'm an evil dictator's underling and follow his rules.
*nods sagely* yes, I am incredibly evil for not letting names like
deathknight, sircool, tomboy007 go through.

We're not here to be killjoys, but there are rules that everyone must
follow, not just the players when they decide what type of name to
use. If we let anyone in, who would really believe that an Elven
mother would name her child pimpstagod?

*waffles on about other things*

In short, I would like to comment that yes, I will ask those who log
on with illegal or just darn right stupid names to recreate.
Furthermore, stating that you're going to 'review' us doesn't really
scare me as we've been threatened with that before.

This is your friendly head builder....Signing off....

I concur with the admin on this issue. How hard is it to -think- of
an original name? DemonLover, Deathbot2000, Frodolives and others of
that ilk are NOT unique nor something Momma is going to name her
offspring.

All games of this genre are based on imagination, else you might as
well play Diablo 2 or Phantasy Star. Here, the mind makes your
pictures and you are only limited by what your imagination can
conceive in a medieval setting. Else you only ruin the game for
yourself and everyone else around you. We come to MU*s to get away
from annoying kids, co-workers and reality.

But then again... as Aerick stated, I, too, am an old Imp/Imm and am
used to being a name-Nazi. Why does this debate always come up? Is it
so strenuous to come up with an unique name, description and
background history?
