Xaos has just recently gone live so in the interest of giving a bit of
a primer, here's the first review.
I've been mudding for roughly 10 years or so, and Xaos is the mud that
I keep coming back to. It has a large and well thought out world, a
good playerbase, a great RP environment, and ever improving code.
It started out in May of 1997 and has been a pet project of the
founder Ragnar since then. As a result of this, most of the code is
unrecognizable from its codebase and as such the mud is essentially a
gigantic list of unique features, but here is a small list.
'Hero' system of levels allowing your character to advance to very
high levels after learning all of the basics of a class. Combined with
a subclass system giving 28 choices in all, there's alot to try. (The
mud is in permanent beta, so some of these classes are works in
progress.)
An excellent item creation and enchanting system which allows the
creation equipment and also diverse enhancement thereof. There's a
spell for most of the statistics you may want to modify.
Outside of specific areas there's a vast wilderness, represented on an
ASCII 'vMap' for ease of navigation of the massive world of Xaos.
Player size has been revamped to more realistically reflect the
implications of size in combat and every day life. Equipment has sizes
and different effects based on size, and combat philosophies work
differently depending on the size of the player.
The game itself, once you've mastered the basic concepts, is extremely
enjoyable. There's plenty to do, immortal events crop up at a healthy
interval, and player interaction is constant.
Come check us out, you won't be disappointed.
