Started there awhile back. Saw a couple good reviews and figured
why not? Newbie friendly? If you're one of a few players I ran
across. They have this newbie area, it's okay and does help. But
no one to help you in the cities they put you in. Die and you go
about trying to remember the ins and outs of the roads to find
your corpse. By the time I got to mine the only thing left was my
robes, pack and staff, try to get a player to help? No way. Fella
sitting in the square, another mage player and says 'Go way buggin
me' tryin to level' Only good thing was with magic missile right
away I could kill a mob and get money for food and a waterskin
right away.
Hour or so later get stolen from by a rogue. Ran into a mage player,
nice one. She replaced all I had stolen from me and did some pretty
decent rp with me as she showed me about the city and gave me
warnings about some of the mobs. Tried to rent so I could get some
supper and rent was basically half what it cost each item. She was
there and gave me some money. Told me that no repayment was necessary
to just help someone when I knew the mud better and had a bit more
money to help 'em without hurting me.
Later, came back and there was this Age of Legends Announcement that
there were new races available. Mud crashed from it after. Couldn't
find the helpfiles I'd been using earlier. Which wasn't so bad
because they have helpfiles on the site. Worked out better
cause trying to read the ones in the mud was a bit difficult with
mobs and characters walking in and out. Decided to spend a day or
two reading the website before going back.
When I got back. First thing there was a bunch of shouts from Chemosh
to a player, chewing 'em out. Tried to level. It's probably one of
the hardest muds to level at. It's roleplay enforced, but I was stuck
trying to level to get money for food and rent far too long to get
any roleplay in. I don't have a huge amount of time to spend online.
When I went looking for players to roleplay with, they were all
sitting in the Square, mostly ooc talking. The female char that
I had met before teleported in and asked me in character how I was
doing before greeting those in the Square. I told her out of
character that it was a bit rough trying to level. She looked at me
and saw that some of my stuff was gone again. Probably a bug in the
rent or 'cause of a crash. But she also admitted the stuff I was
missing wouldn't really help for leveling at newbie level stuff. It
being a school night, I had to go. I was also a bit frustrated too,
so a break from it was in order. She'd mudmailed a couple of mage
players and asked them to take me on as a student. I never heard
from them, not then, not later.
Next time I go in there's this Age of Legends message right away,
yelling at a player. I rent out. Didn't want that stress again. Came
back a day or so later. Another Age of Legends message yelling at
a player. I decided to not let it get to me. No one really about to
roleplay with, so I concentrated on leveling. Still just as hard,
but I finally made it to level two. It felt good. Only a little
while later I got stolen from again. Money and my waterskin gone.
Had to sell some of my eq to pay rent. When I came back I wrote to
the player who'd helped me asking about a teacher. She teleported
to me and said she'd do lessons with me until a more permament
teacher was found and gave me my first lesson. Really good.
Told me the laws of the Conclave and discussed them with me, getting
me to think about them. Asked me all kinds of questions about my
characters interest in magic, in how he viewed magic. This was
really good. While we were there the mage player who'd told me to
go away came in. She asked him to leave, that she was giving a
lesson. He gave her a bunch of ooc grief. Kept going on how he
wanted to get revenge and why couldn't he get it since it was
personal and not the Conclave's business. The guy just didnt get
it, get anything she was saying. He'd nod, say ok, then ask the
same thing a few moments later. I had to go, so she showed me back
to the Inn.
Next time I came in there was a letter from the Mage, she had found
a mage to take me as a student and suggested I write to him. Only
he never responded. Never showed up. She was going to the Towers,
she explained cause she was going to take responsibility for what
she'd done, cautioned me on a few things so I wouldnt make her
mistakes. She hadn't known until she read the books. I logged in
a couple of times to see if the mage had written to me, I wrote to
him again. Still nothing. Only thing I did see was more of Age of
Legends yelling at players. Last night it really was stupid. Yelling
at players cause they had notell flags up. That's when I realized
that it wasn't going to get better. Just get worse. During the night
there was this bully black robe mage, I'd bowed to him and he started
threatening me right off, saying I was too slow in my bow. To meet
his eyes when I answered him. I may have not done an emote of meeting
his eyes, but I didnt do one of not meeting his eyes. When it took me
a moment to type a reply he started yelling at me for ignoring him.
Threatened to kill me on the spot. I told him oocly that I had been
typing and not a really fast typer. No problem he said then proceeded
to trash me icly again when I drank from my skin. He hadn't given me
permission. Then said he had to go because a player was on that he
wanted revenge for them talking to the higher ups in the order and
getting him in trouble.
Yeah right, I want to play in a place where I get treated like crap
icly, get only one or two players who will help me out figuring
things out, get no response from the mage who was to teach me, watch
imms treat players like crap. I mean if someone is notell you can go
invis and go where they are and whisper to em and find out what's
going on instead of making all the players feel like crap.
There were a couple of other players who seemed okay. But when you
meet more that aren't than are, then you can see why the playerbase
is so small.

I'm the player of the Magi who helped you.
I'm also the player the Age of Legends global shout was aimed
at. Was I upset about being yelled at? Yes. I hadn't done what
had been yelled at me, BUT the Immortals had only seen one
part of the rp, they hadn't been there for all of it. So the yell
was based on what they had saw. I wrote to Chemosh in an email and
it was handled accordingly.
See that's the thing. If you don't tell an Immortal, you're not
going to get things worked out. Immortals aren't able to watch
every single rp, every single player in the mud. They try to
give the players as much leeway as possible, but still check
from time to time to make sure that the plays aren't using ooc
info and stuff.
Despite what Chem said :P The mud is newbie friendly. Immortals
do help newbies as do players. As much as they can. But what comes
with any game you play is your responsibility as a player to know
the rules, to read the helpfiles, read the website and to contact
immortals with problems that they can help with.
I do hope Chem keeps the reviews. But I also hope that players use
common sense and go to the Immortals with problems. Mishakal is
the Head Social Immortal, an implementor. Write to her if you
have a problem with roleplay. Write to Chem if you have a problem
with an immortal. Write to any immortal for help with players.
The key is to take it to THEM so that they can fix the problem
and deal with the player.
I'm still at the mud. Still roleplaying and still loving Age of
Legends: Tales of the Lance.
Yeah there are some things I think are wrong and should be changed
but I also know that may just be me with a one-sided opinion and
that if it were something that seems to be more than an isolated
incident then I'd mail Chem or Mish about it.

That's a very interesting version of how things happen on Age
of Legends, and, as with all reviews posted on here must be
taken with a grain of salt. One player's experience and bad
luck is by no means symptomatic of the mud as a whole, any
more than someone who absolutely gushes about the place is
telling the complete truth.
From the sounds of things, this is a person who logged onto
the mud once, maybe twice a day. Apparently he heard immortals
chewing players out every time he logged on. I think when an
immortal has to chew out a player only once in a day, things
are going fairly well, wouldn't you immortals out there agree?
Anyway, I can speak from experience and an inside knowledge of
what goes on on the mud, and the incidents described here
involve maybe two or three players, tops. Every mud has its
problem players, and ours is no different. There's just no
real good way to shake all of them while not getting one or
two more while you're at it.
Is it our fault the way players act when they don't think
we're looking? I would say no. The chewing out that goes
on is usually the result of endless rules breaking and poor
behavior, which is intended to help correct problems as they
arise. We don't just log on and decide to yell at players
for our own jollies.
Similarly, is it our fault this particular player had a rough
time finding a mage to tutor him? No. There's only so many
hours in the day. We help however we can, and if the player
mages aren't around, we can't be held responsible for that
either.
I'd be able to say more, but I've noticed a tendency for
people to post anonymously when their intent is to say
negative things. This means that:
1) The person who wrote this review is still playing the
mud and fears reprisal, which really he shouldn't be, as
this review contained a lot of feedback that will be very
useful in the future. In which case, hey, he's still
playing, it can't be that bad. Or,
2) The person who wrote this review is not still playing,
and wished to be another in a line of people who like to
flame things anonymously in the hopes that those flamed
will lose sleep at night trying to figure out who the flamer
is.
Either way, take the review with a grain of salt, as you would
any other review. And don't hold an entire mud responsible for
something that is solely the fault of a few problem players,
and people simply being unavailable.
That is all. Thank you.

The player that bullied you, we know who he is, and had you bothered
to ask, you'd know he's already in the middle of a world of trouble
for such things. Both IC'ly and OOC'ly. As for newbie friendly, did
you READ the mud's description? It says on there 'Not newbie
friendly'. Notell. Sorry, but unfortunatly when archmagi and such
go notell, it's hard for people to get ahold of them, including
newbies, which plays into your 'not newbie friendly' little scenario.
There is a newbie channel, I have a feeling that had you bothered to
use it, you might have gotten a bit more help from the immortal staff
than you did.
Anyway, I apologize for the idiot player, and for the 'chewing out'.
As for a small player base, we have boot time highs in or near the
20's. We have an introduction system where, unless you know
someone's name and they introduce themself to you, you don't
see them. Thus, no one appears on your who list.
And finally, reviews like this are why I'm taking off the player
reviews option. It's a place where people complain about things
they did, or because they mud wasn't their type of mud. Read the
description, and you might have avoided all the trouble. We aren't
a newbie friendly mud.
