The Hidden Fortress derives its name from a film released in
1958 by acclaimed Japanese director Akira Kurosawa and
starring Toshiro Mifune. The actual game has very little to
do with that movie except for the focus on feudal Japan.
The setting of the game is a fictional Japan during the Edo
Period. The theme is very stylized and focuses more on
Japanese culture than on being true to historical facts.
You are as likely to run into fox demons and shape shifting
tanuki as you are Tokugawa Ieyasu or Oda Nobubaga. Aside from
the potential for having fantastical adventures the game
attempts to be a simulator for life in this era. You start
out as a rural samurai or ronin and you are free to make your
way in the world any way you see fit. You can become a famous
swordmaker and craft the finest blades sought after by the
greatest warriors; or you can be one of those warriors
focusing your life on honing your skills becoming known
throughout the land from the lowliest peasant to the Shogun
himself! Or thrust yourself into the realm of politics and
become Shogun! Your fate is in your hands.
