Mud is fully operational

Santa Anas blow dust from the desert over the mountains, hazing the
sky brown; on a clear day, dust devils swirl down F St. behind
buses and cars. The curved Bay Bridge shimmer like a ring on the
finger of the harbor and in the distance, a tugboat guides a naval
destroyer out to sea. Across the bridge, vacationers and college
students dot the white beaches of Coronado, swimming and tanning.
The 5 slashes the city in half like a grey scar. At the border, the
freeway widens like a dammed river and the cars glitter in the sun;
further south, Mexico is a realm of dust and rock. North of the
city, curved roads wind through thick trees up steep hills and
massive mansions crown high cliffs overlooking the rushing sea.

San Diego in the afternoon.

Walk the city at night. Pass the Mexican whores and the guy who
wants to park your car for five bucks, even though you're not
driving. Pass the La Jolla trophy wives who snipe their best
friends with vicious gossip while smiling supermodel smiles. Pass
the punk kids and the surfers smoking dope on the grass by Mission
Bay.

Then leave them behind, and slip into the Dream of San Diego as it
was and will be: a dangerous and dusty border town, a coldly
elegant city of promise, a crash of skewed buildings and wandering
streets, a tangle of gears and copper pipes and half-exploded gadgets.

But wait. There's more....
