d20MUD: Star Wars is a new genre of star wars MUD out there,
using the powerful d20MUD Engine used previously with the
AxiomRPG, Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance themes.

We have decided to take our code in a new direction and
start up a Star Wars version of our MUD, and have been
working hard since early 2012. The progress we have made so
far is excellent, and we now have a small custom world, and
a small playerbase of about 15 regular players, ranging from
2-6 people on most of the time. Not a bad start we feel for
only being in existence about a month.

The code is very similar to d20MUD if you are familiar with
that, but if not let's run down a few of the stock features
in our heavily modified CircleMUD codebase.

- auto experience rewards for role playing
- detailed, clean-looking score sheet
- mentor system allowing you to group with any level
- optional pvp system
- ascii automap in room descriptions
- crafting system allowing you to create your own gear with
custom stats and descriptions
- traditional, diku-style pulse based combat
- MSDP & MXP enabled code
- pet system allowing for mounts, pets and companions that
can tank for you and offer additional attacks each round.
- multiclassing system
- menu based levelling process
- d20 feat, skill and spell/force power systems
- mob bounties awarding exp, credits and quest points
- coded quests, some of which offer unique storylines

The Star Wars version has all of this, plus some additional
features:
- 5 base classes, force adept, scout, scoundrel, squad
leader and soldier (try saying that 5 times fast!)
- 18 base races and 1 advaced race (with more to come)
- 1 prestige class (weapon master, more to come)
- taxi system for travel between zones (planets are too big
for roads-only in our minds)
- shuttle system for travel between planets
- 9 force powers to date (more to come)
- 3 planets, each having 3-5 zones
- market ward area for selling objects to other players,
saving over reboots

So we've gotten a fair bit done in a month, and there seems
to be a fair bit of interest. My ongoing list for the next
month is as follows:

- continue to fix bugs, tweak things for balance, etc. This
is always ongoing
- add more zones. My goal right now is a small zone a week,
50-80 rooms or so. I've exceed that so far.
- start to add a few story based quests to both Coruscant
and Korriban for starting players.
- Gather input and begin implementation for a space system.
phase 1 will include basic one person starcraft and combat
versus npc starcraft, plus a loot and ship customization
system. Phase I will be basics, Phase II and II will be
more complex space combat, cargo systems, capital ships,
etc. This will not be a clone of the SWR system, though it
will offer all the same functionality.
- Add more feats and force powers. Especially focus on the
scout, scoundrel and squad leader classes.
- Add more advanced races, such as Chiss, and other popular
races from Star Wars lore.

And that's about where we are to date. If you've stuck with
me this far, I'm guessing I've at least piqued your
interest. Come by and check things out. We also offer a
GUI interface on our flash web client as well as for
MUSHclient, which can make playing easier.

We're are http://starwars.d20mud.com. Be careful there's a
flash intro with music, so you may want to turn down your
speakers. This can be toggled off by clicking the link at
the bottom of the main page.

Or if you just want to connect straight to the mud, it'
starwars.d20mud.com port 6000.

Cheers,

I am Gicker there. Feel free to look me up there, or ask
your questions on the 'chat' channel. Keep in mind during
the day I am at work and may be slow to respond. Our
busiest times are late afternoon and early evening, Eastern
time zone. Role play hour is 11pm-1pm EST and 7pm-9pm EST
every day. Double exp rewards during this time for role
playing.

See you on the MUD!

Another update:

We added the Jedi Knight prestige class and a boatload of
feats and talents for them. We also added the Sith Apprentice
prestige class, with new feats and talents for them coming
later this week.

We also added an ignore command, so those people who annoy you
can now be ignored without needed to set up gagging functions
in your client.

Its nice to see a new Mud in the banner rotation. But I'd like to offer a friendly suggestion for any forth coming banners.

The 'kotor' bit seems a bit ambiguous...I'm sure you're definitely attracting a specific crowd who is familiar with the source material. It may be nicer to replace it with something slightly less Star Wars oriented; a feature or something unique to the code base that potential players who don't have their Star Wars bible memorized may find appealing.

I thought I'd let you know, I tried to create an account and
character several times on the game, but was not able to every
time I tried. Essentially, I could create an account, and then
I'd try to create a character, get as far as choosing gender,
press enter to continue, and either the MUD crashed, or I was
just DCed for some reason.

I press enter, as it prompts.

KOTOR isn't exactly some obscure Star Wars story that nobody
knows about. It's one of the most popular Star Wars games of
all time and is arguably one of the more well known parts of
Star Wars beyond the films. I doubt even people with the
slightest knowledge of Star Wars wouldn't know what that is.

I didn't say it was an obscure part of Star Wars. I haven't payed much attention to Star Wars in the last 10 years and knew it meant Knights of the Old Republic.

However, 'KotoR-Style Character Development' is a very unclear statement. I'm sure _every_ Star Wars fan could probably rattle off what it means. But as one of the mudders who is not sitting next to a stack of Star Wars sourcebooks I don't see relevant Mud information...

Anyways, putting sarcasm from the previous paragraph aside. I found the banner appealing beyond the one statement. Its a Mud I've actually been meaning to poke around some after reading some of gicker's posts regarding it. I just haven't had the time to do so.

I tried to create just a couple of moments again, and I
encountered the same bug. I was disconnected, or the mud
crashed I can't tell, the moment I input entered after
choosing gender.

Agreed Jodah, that's why I want to get it fixed as fast as
possible.

Lexx I found another possible cause to this problem, and have
closed off the potential of that crashing us. When you have a
free moment please try again.

Thus far I have not been able to reproduce the error, but we
have been crashing a lot lately and that would be why.

My apologies for the inconvenience this may be causing those
who wish to try us out.

It's a valid point. Those who have played the KotoR games
will have a good idea of what it means. I think most people
who would want to play a Star Wars MUD probably have played
KotoR and would know what it means. For those that don't,
if it turns them off, so be it. I think we have a better
chance of getting people to try us by playing on our
strengths, than by listing other features that aren't
necessarily specific to the star wars theme, and are
probably not all that uncommon among other Star Wars MUDs.

I could have said d20 Rules or SAGA rules, which more
closely fits our system, but I think those are even more
obscure, and KotoR-style rules is an accurate
representation.

So why it's a valid point, I can't currently think of
anything that would be a better replacement, which would, in
my mind, be more attractive to the average person willing to
play a Star Wars MUD in the first place.

I'm able to connect, I just can't make it past feat selection in character creation. It lets
me get to that point, but I can just forever select them and say yes. When I try to do -1 to
get out without spending points, and say yes I want to do that, it just puts me back on the
feat selection screen.

I believe it requires that you type out "yes" and doesn't
accept "y". It's dumb and I have been meaning to fix it, but
for whatever reason I keep forgetting to. Will do so today
though.

I am guessing this must be the problem, because no one else
has complained about it. Talk to me in game if you need
further help or send me a mail. I am Gicker there as well.

A little update: We've added a custom mail system that allows
you to have an inbox and sent box, and which stores the mails
in a database instead of you having to carry them around as
objects. You can keep and re-read every mail you receive or
send, or delete them ones you no longer want.

We also added to our note system the ability to archive,
unarchive notes, and mark all notes as read.

I have been playing this MUD for a few weeks now and I have got to say that it is pretty fun.

Some of the features i enjoy are:
Crafting
RP
PVP(optional)
Lots of feats
character customization
multi-classing
quests
plenty of races
player guilds, shops

gicker is always fixing and adding things to appease our gripes and bug finds. The people that i have played with are enjoyable and the atmosphere is nice. Come check it out!
