AoD has been in development since early 1998. We have
strived to create a unique medieval-fantasy world
powered by the imaginations of our experienced
administration and talented coders. Since then, the
MUD has taken on a life of its own, and our wizards
and players continue to shape this enchanting world
that we call home. AoD is NOT another one of those
low quality mud that is here today and gone tomorrow.
Since our offical opening in March of 2000, the mud
has developed a steady base of regular players. in addition
to our high quality vivid world, provide an enjoyable
fun environment for new and experienced players.

AoD is Ages of Despair, a Medieval themed MUD.

I myself have played for over 9 years and wouldnt have it any other way. while the player number is small than it used to be, its still a great place to call a second home.

As for ASCII, what you find when you log in is the most ASCII you will find in the game. the rare others can be filtered with options, just ask and we will walk you through it.

The only thing unique about this promotion is that you don't even state what AoD even stands for, or the theme of the MUD in question.

Hey, anything more annoying than ascii art? Thats some odd stuff with a screen reader, we hear the words of the punctuation and often have to wait for our screen readers to find the text. I dont like to turn off the reading of punctuation in jaws because i would then miss important punctuation because some commands require it. will attempt to try this game however, but if i cant turn off that dang ascii art i will quickly run for the hills so to speak. I officially request admins think of us who use screenreaders when putting in ascii art. that and separators like ~=~=~= ya get the idea? a couple dashes would work great so all jaws users or other screen reader users hear is dash dash much more effeciant too. but yes, will try it.

Is there a standard block of text or escape sequence
known to screen readers that can allow muds to disable
reading, send pictures, then re-enable reading?

I've not heard of one, but perhaps it could be done with MXP? I also recall reading about a mud that provided a separate port number for blind players, allowing them to automatically skip ASCII art and such.

Having said that, I have an ASCII greeting and none of my blind players have ever complained about it. I just assumed they had some way of ignoring it.

Odd way of doing it, 4D used a toggle to turn off ASCII
images, certainly a lot simpler than a separate port number.

But then you have to ask every player each time they connect whether or not they want to view the ASCII greeting.

Hmm, true, hadn't thought of the greetings screen itself was
just thinking of once in the game.

Meh, I'm a blind player and the ascii really isn't much of a bother unless it's consistently used throughout gameplay. For example, those muds that seems to find it amusing to throw random ascii in the room descs are not my friends. But a bit at the opening screen isn't too bad and I just skip it altogether.

I'm one of the creators for Ages of Despair (I know, there's lots of abbreviations for AoD.) I know the intro screen usually has a random ASCII picture, but the rest of the game not so much other than the occasional sign. (The main mud god likes to kill people messily occasionally, but that can be turned off with nospam.) Is there possibly some type of delimiter that can be used, like is done in code to tell the computer to ignore a certain block? This is often done with a couple of slashes and used for comments in the code. Maybe the text to speech reader has something similar. I personally wouldn't think it would be too hard to add a couple characters at the beginning and end of a picture file (or 10). I've had my computer turn on the text to speech before, so I understand how horrible ASCII pictures can sound.
