So far, I haven't really been able to find my ideal idea of a MUD. The search files haven't been much help since some MUDs I do like don't even appear on what I look for. I'm looking for something that's:
- Roleplaying intensive or encouraged
- Not too easy (other players don't give free superweapons just because they have some extra ones lying around)
- 'Realistic'. I'd prefer PK rules where you could get hunted down for killing someone in the city, not those that outright disallow you from PK-ing.
- Original, not based on DBZ, middle earth, pokemon, etc
- Enough players to chat with, or at least the people aren't too spread out over a huge landscape.
- It's possible for someone who started out 3 months before an oldbie to catch up (e.g. fast learning, or permanent death)
- Free, which puts the eternal city out of the list :(
- Preferably classless

Thanks!

Hi.

Looking over your criteria, a few muds I'm familiar with come to mind.

* Armageddon - Rp intensive, very realistic, and fits everything else on your list pretty much. Has a healthy player population, but there are no global chat channels and ooc chat is discouraged. However, the forums are very much alive, so you could be playing Arm and at the same time chatting on the forums :D
* Cybersphere - haven't really played it but I know that it fills most of your criteria... I'm not sure about the 'not too easy' part.
* Forgotten Kingdoms? - I don't know anything about Forgotten Realms, which the mud's based on. I read the reviews though and pretty much every single reviewer is enthralled. Just started playing it. It's RPI, not too easy because you have to seek out other players ICly to achieve most things; PK is allowed within IC reason; there is a devoted player pop. It does have classes, though... but religions make up for the restriction of the class mold (imho!)

Those are all I can think of at the moment!
Good luck in finding your home MUD :)

Thanks.

Armageddon looks just nice for me. I don't really like RPI MUDs most of the time because they don't feel nice, but that one seems to suit me just fine. Mostly I don't really feel lonely because I can't tell who's a NPC and who's a PC, only to be taken by surprise when one of the 'NPC's start talking to me :P

Honestly, I'd suggest trying Crossroads MUSH (crossroadsmush.com 5555) if you are wanting to role play in an original setting. You won't have to worry about classes because there are none - there is who your character is and what he/she does. You also don't have to worry about catching up with older players because there are no levels, there is no XP, and there is no combat system (though people can virtually roll dice to help resolve conflicts if they want to). Finally, I don't think I've seen less than 20 players on at any time.

If you must have things like leveling, mobs, quests, and coded weapons, then you may not like Crossroads, but if you're looking for a place to play and are willing to try a different variety of MUD, I'd encourage you give it a go.

Smuz... do you mean an immortal brings an NPC to life, or what you believe to be an NPC is actually a PC? If it's the former, I'm jealous. The immortals of Arm are known to do that, but I've not witnessed it yet. :(
But yes, Arm is truly one of a kind. Maybe I'll bump into you in-world ;-) or on the forums (name: Tulana).

It's the latter. Like in most other MUDs, the PCs tend to be very prominent with names lake Thor_AxeEater, with the NPCs being so obviously known as "a fat soldier". At least with Arm, all the chars look the same :P

Heh, I rather like it when imms possess NPCs. I've seen it happen once in another game, when I complained that someone killed me and stripped my char naked, some NPC out of nowhere came and gave me some nice clothes.

Could add Toril to that list as well. There are always plenty online to chat with and global channels such as GCC "game play chat" and OOC. RP is also heavily encouraged and there are even gods dedicated to hosting RP events. (See RPNews). I encourage you to check it out. I play there pretty frequently too. [torilmud.org 9999]

I also agree with Violette on her choices as well!

Take out Preferably classless and not those that outright disallow you from PK-ing, I think The Gathering.. might be a good choice for you! We have everything else you're looking for a lot more! While we have a large landscape, a huge world, its almost always easy to find people, and we're trying hard to get a bigger player base to make it even easyer to find new people, we'll be very happy if you come give us a try.
The Gathering...
