Wanted: Coder
WaterdeepMUD is currently taking applications for the position of coder. We are looking for someone with good skills, as our codebase isn't the most pleasent working with due to 12 years of changes through the era of at least 4 major coders. I've had plenty of really good coders even declare "wtf" at some of the reactions the mud has given to new codes. We have no specific agenda for coding, just a big book of "things we've always wanted" that we slowly chisel away, while adding to it. Right now general work would be towards some repair to the code, as we've switched from a Linux 32bit box into a 64, and its caused some hiccups and a little stability issues, nothing major. We retain a lot of the stock RoT version of the classes, races, skills and spells and its about time we've either added or changed around these. We had a major blunder with a race over, started in 2001, the immortal behind it only went so far, removed and changed some skills and spells and the work remained idle for a good 5+ years. so mortals are wary of major changes. WaterdeepMUD also has the history of working slow on projects.
The one requirement of interested people is that you play the game first before applying, get to know the people and the staff. We've had 4 major coders but also a slew of "coders" who either did nothing or attempted major damage to the game (stealing the code or just deleting it). Thus sadly has given me major trust issues to whom I hand the server keys to. I am also not a fan of posting this job to the internet public, we usually resource from in-house, but due to current times, a smaller pbase, I'm going public for the better good.
General code agreement is that the author is entitled obviously to a copy and has full use of their code, but we retain the right to use that code for the lifespan of WaterdeepMUD itself.
Applications can be send to wdmud<at>waterdeepmud<dot>com or admin@ as listed wih this account. Just give me a general background, possible other muds that you've worked on, possible recommendations from other muds, and or an idea of what kind of skills you're bringing in.
Thank you for your time.
