Yo, everyone. I'm completely new at this whole mudding thing. It would be incrediabley nice for anyone to give a point in the right direction. I really have no idea on what to do. I guess I am an uber noob, but we all have to start somewhere. Anyways, I don't know anything about coding...so a good FREE place to learn some C++ Coding would be nice. That's all I know I need...but Im looking to design some pretty good MUDs I just need someone to dedicate some time to me and I would be very grateful. Remember, I have no clue about ANYTHING.
-Dont forget me now, That would be a shame.

Before you start trying to design your own, I'd strongly suggest spending at least a few months playing various existing muds so that you can get an idea of what sort of design concepts are out there and how well they work out in practice.

Once you've done that, make a list of all the things you like and don't like, and post it on TMC. The more information you can give about the sort of mud you want to design, the better the suggestions people can give about what sort of codebase to start from.

One of the best suggestions, aside from what KaViR has already said, is also pay attention to the codebases that each MUD list, and go out of your way to try a variety of those.

If you end up on 10 different Circle based MUDs without realizing they all come from the same source that may cloud your search for what type of codebase may best suit you.

Also on the codebase issue, not all of them are coded in C++, you do have some that are, but you also have just plain C, C#, Ruby, Java, and I'm sure others, so I wouldn't jump the gun on trying to learn a programming language until you are sure what codebase you prefer. Once you try enough MUDs and find what codebase you prefer, then get really familiar with that codebase from a player's perspective, then might be a good time to start considering learning the language it is in. Trying to learn a programming language first could possibly be very limiting toward what codebases you could use.

It probably goes without saying that you should only stick to Newbie Friendly MUDs starting out :p <cheap plug>The MUD I run I feel has a very good Newbie School that is aimed at any level of player. That could be a good place to start, as it does focus on walking even a brand new MUD player through the steps of the basics of MUDing along with what is specific to the MUD.</cheap plug>

Whatever direction you choose to go, though, good luck and welcome to the world of MUDing :)
