Im getting to that point where im thinking about coming up with an actual name for my MUD. DynamicMUD is ok for an engine but it doesnt exactly feel like a fun place to be. That and I think there was another mud project called Dynamic MUD a while ago that has since ceased development, though the philosophys and designs are far different.

When going to play a game what kind of name attracts players? What draws you in? Do people prefer the standard English language names or the fantasyesq names? How about mixed names or the use of noncommon english words to accent a name?

You could try calling your MUD "Don't Play This". It might work.

As long as you don't call it Aaabracadabra, I doubt that the name really means all the much. :)

A friend of mine has been working on and off on a codebase called DynaMUD for the last few years, if that's what you're thinking of...

I personally don't look at games that end their name in MUD. No particular reason... I just don't like it :P

No, I saw that on your website the other day but there is a dynamic mud on source forge but I dont think its had any activity for 3 or 4 years now. Do a google search, it shows up in the top few entries near mine.

Thats another good reason why I need a better name for the actual game :P I want the game world to have its own identity.

I have a few ideas ive been toying with for about a week now but I dont want to announce them to the public just yet, going to see what my testers and friends interested in the game think first.

I second not ending your name with MUD.

If there is a particular theme, I think it might be helpful or at least informative to pick something relative to the theme of the MUD. If not, then I don't suppose it really matters all that much.

When I was like 14 and a total MUD newbie, I started playing one MUD because it's name was similar to one of the MUDs I had played on AOL... and another I played because it was higher up on the list (began with two A's), but I've since had a bit of a distaste for places that name their MUDs in an attempt to gain a better position on alphabetical listings. But outside of those two examples, the name hasn't really mattered much to me.

I agree about not using MUD in the name of your game, unless its germane to the theme (like if your world was a big ball of mud, ya might call it World of Gooey Mud, or something inane like that, but doubt that'd happen)

The mud name should catch people's attention... For Osiris, probably something like, "Geriatric Sexporium" might be a good one.

People seem to use certain "keywords" a lot though...I've actually been contemplating changing my mud's name because of it. So far though, I've yet to come up with something better to describe mine than Death's Realm, but then, mine is multi-themed to a degree, hence the problem with coming up with one. Nexus of Worlds sounds too plain...

There was a thread recently poking fun at all of the similarly named MUDs... let me see if I can find the link...

There we go. There are some good points made in the thread, so I would actually suggest looking over that and trying to avoid some of the cliches from there.

I originally was thinking of using a mostly cookie cutter "Realm of .*" type name, but I think I've ruled that out. Do people put connotations on Japanese sounding names? I know the general I have a great respect for ancient Japanese culture and history and I think it will influence me a lot during the development of my game.

The name should obviously have some relation to the content of the game, or people who log on will just feel cheated.

So in short; if the general theme is ancient Japan, a Japanese sounding name is good, otherwise it's bad.

I seem to recall that someone wrote a MUD Name Generator awhile back, I can't seem to find any links to it, but maybe someone with a better memory or link management skills might be able to point you to it.

The most striking mud name I've seen thus far
is "Contemporary Creations".

I was like "wtf, sounds like a store in the mall."

Of course, there's also:

"Heroic and Dark Tales of the Magical Lands of the Ancient Wispy Forest Thing Legends"

But I have to admit, that mud was mine and I only
put it up to flip the wigs of other muds on intermud.

Worked pretty well, too. They wigged right out.

I think if I avoid any names like these I should be pretty safe :P

I dont know if want to keep the oriental sounding name, even if oriental culture and history does influence the features and content of my game. I want a name that sounds cool, is memorable, and stands out. It would be nice if there was a website out there about naming and branding.
