I'm working with a company that's developing a MUD client for mobile devices. We're close to having it ready and we're wondering if there are any specific features that you'd like to see. Thanks!

I don't know; sounds like you'd have seriously limited functionality. How would you speak in coherent words? It's hard to type complete sentences on a cell phone, especially if you're trying to keep up in a conversation with someone who is writing from a full keyboard.

Make Lovecraft, not Warcraft.

It depends on the phone you're using, certainly with some phones (is it the LG with the slide out keyboard? among others) typing is almost as fast as touch typing once you get going. Then you have alternative input keyboards with gesture models, you could have drop down context sensitive word selection, etcetera. Not to mention half the time you may just login with the phone to bash rather than RP.

Thanks for the input. As of right now, the app is going to be for the iPhone, but we hope to expand to Android and Blackberry soon. There will be the standard keyboard, but alternate data inputs will be available for common functionalities.

I'm not seeing how you could fit an onscreen keyboard on the iPhone with enough space left over for more than a couple lines of text, not to mention you can't fit as many characters in an iPhone's width, compared to a regular computer, so it would take up more 'lines' to say the same thing.

I love the idea, just curious how it would work on a practical level, especially amongst battle spam, etc.

There is already a java client called midpssh that you can download for Blackberry. It is a fully functional telnet and ssh client. I have it on my Curve. It works great for muds and I use it all of the time.

I use the MIDP on my blackberry. It's a little lame in that it is basic telnet and on a busy MUD like NWA things can scroll off and you can't scroll back. Server side aliases really help. I only use it for Admin/Staff uses as typing is slow without a full keyboard.

Here's the link:

I use PuTTY for Symbian OS on my Nokia E63 to SSH into a shell
and then tintin from there into my MUD. I think it's more useful
for administrators than players though.

I'll bite.

And I'll post again after I've had some time to play with it.

For what it is... it isn't too bad.

Color will be a welcome addition when you guys get that worked out.

A handful of suggestions...

-A way to hide the entire bottom interface (the keyboard, shortcuts, etc) would be nice, to where you have a "full screen" view of the MUD window.

-A way to "zoom" in and out on the text would be good too. The text so small is a bit hard on the eyes for any extended period of time.

-I don't know that there would really be a way around this* but having a max width of less than 80 characters wide will likely be pretty limiting, as it really messes with the typical display most people will be used to. Even looking at a room description with all of the extra breaks is a bit hard.

*Being able to turn the iphone sideways and having the screen and such adjust (such as when you are texting) would be fantastic. This might help the character width limit to a degree, but definitely with typing that would be welcome because I know I find it much easier to type with it sideways.

-Having some way to view it in the typical courier font would be great as well, as I know a lot of MUDs have a lot of their display dependent on that character set, width, etc.

That's everything I've noticed so far.

It's still a little ways away from being able to be used for serious play I think, but this is definitely a great start, and I think worth the $0.99. As an Admin, this would be handy to check in on things when I don't have access to a computer.

I logged in a secondary imm clone character of mine and interacted with my main character connected through the computer, and the speed on the phone pretty much matched my PC. So I don't think that would be too big of a deal.

The interface was easy to pick up and I think a lot of the short cuts added in to make it quicker and easier to do some of the common actions in the game is a good step forward as well.

I think if you guys can continue to update it based on user feedback like this, it has potential for being able to used for at least casual play.

Good job!

Thanks for the input! There's been a lot of great feedback to help us out with the next version. We've gotten landscape working which resolves some of the screen size issues. There's just a few things left at this point. We should be sending an update to Apple before too long.

This would have to run on Windows Mobile to be of any interest to me. (The keyboard on my HTC Touch Pro2 is actually good enough for MUD play, I think, and a largish 800x480 screen is a plus in this context too).
Please do not feed the troll.

Already better than iMud :)

Don't know if it is because I have color on, but there seems to be a lot of blank lines.
