Is any MUD administrator willing to share statistics from their MUD? I would like to know how popular is each class and race in your MUD, as well as at what hours you get most players, and other statistics. I think it would be interesting.

thx

You might want to check out MudStats: http://mudstats.com/

Some of the muds (presumably those using MSSP) have quite a bit of information about their player numbers under the "Charts & Graphs" tab - eg, here's my mud: http://mudstats.com/Game/GodWarsII.aspx

(Comment added by KaVir on Wed Nov 4 14:43:49 2009)

Here's a list of how many characters there are of each class (the last two were added later, which at least partially explains their lowest popularity):

  • 482 Vampires (since 19th July 2005).
  • 364 Werewolves (since 19th July 2005).
  • 425 Mages (since 19th July 2005).
  • 502 Demons (since 19th July 2005).
  • 350 Dragons (since 21st January 2007).
  • 58 Titans (since 19th July 2009).

Note that characters begin without a class, so the above each represent several hours investment. I don't have races.

There are 14952 player files (3918 female, 263 without gender) with a combined playing time of 2030313151 seconds. The oldest pfiles were created 1st November 2004, and while I do purge old ones from time to time I've not done so for about a year.

Gender is rather meaningless though, as it's randomly assigned when you create and can be changed at will.

I'd be willing to share info with you but make some kind of list of what info you'd want, besides average number of players and what race/classes are popular.

On a side note, how does MudStats come up with their information? I've never signed up for them or did anything with my game that would allow them to read such data, and the data they are showing on the site is utterly wrong for my game. It says 1 player connected with an average of 4 players which is just not true. Right now I got 14 people on at noon time EST, and our monthly average at the moment is at least 12 people (we record our player numbers but only once per hour).

I'll watch for a few days and get back to you on what race and classes are popular. Generally late afternoon and evenings are when things are pumping around the place, our low point starts roughly after midnight and ends at 10am.

(Comment added by WDMUD on Wed Nov 4 14:15:36 2009)

And in general our population tends to float from 10 to 30, we see the 30s early evening, say 7 to 9pm EST.

Perhaps they've set up a bot to log on once per day and type 'who'? The page for your game gives an average of 7 players and a peak of 21 - when I checked just now you had 10 with a peak of 19. They state that there is no hourly data for your game, so if they're just checking daily it could be they're catching you at a slightly off time.

Their data for my game is fairly accurate, although their player average of 22 is a little high (my mud makes it 20.11), but they've calculated it hourly over 30 days while I've calculated it to the second over 27.5 days (uptime), so some discrepancy is to be expected.

Have you considered implementing MSSP so that they can retrieve more accurate data from your mud?

From what I've gathered mudstats.com indeed sets up a bot and logs in daily, with an option on the site to change the crawl delay.

MSSP is a less intrusive option if you want hourly reports, but as far as I know mudstats only uses mssp for the player count. Would be interesting to know if they also support the mssp 'crawl delay' setting.

Thank you. I would also like to see data related to gender. I don't know what else you keep track of in your database about players and their preferences.

    Some info about NarutoMUD:

    Our MUD Stats page: http://mudstats.com/Game/NarutoMUD.aspx

Print out from our mudstat command:
    Statistics for NarutoMUD
    Opened: December 1, 2004
    Total Pfiles: 270
    Total Areas : 20 Total Rooms : 1353
    Total Shops : 22 Total Helpfiles: 766
    Concentrations of Villages:
    Leaf: 47% Stone: 9%
    Mist: 19% Sand: 15%
    Sound: 9%
    Population Statistics:
    Male: 83% Female: 16%
    Overall Player Statistics:
Highest Level: 201 Most Hours: 2,536
Average Level: 71 Average Hours: 276
Most MDeaths: 63 Most MKills: 18,708
Average MDeaths: 10 Average MKills: 12,444
These Statistics are accurate as of Fri Nov 6 18:47:04 2009

Only thing to note for the pfile count is we use a pfile cleaner that deletes out-dated pfiles and we don't keep a count of total pfiles created ever.

Leaf Village is the main village from the show, so it is sort of obvious a lot of folks choose it to start. Plus, later in game you have the option to learn skills out of other villages, so some people just choose Leaf just to start then branch out later.

I took a page from Gatz and followed his list, sort of.

    WaterdeepMUD Statistics
    -----------------------
    Opened : August 12th, 1997
    Total Pfiles: 5602
    Total Areas : 278
    Total Rooms : 36,129
    Total Shops : 868
    Mobiles : 6,654 Unique / 15,598 Population
    Objects : 13,334 Unique

Pfile count includes all pfiles, we haven't done a cleanup
in several years (doing one this month) and we never remove
    our 'Hero' level 101 players.

Player Race/Class Data taken from 29 seperate players.

    Wizard : 7
    Gladiator: 5
    Priest : 5
    Sage : 4
    Mercenary: 3
    Lich : 1

    Human : 13
    Drow : 4
    Thrikreen: 3
    Elf : 2
    Kenku : 2
    HalfOrc : 1
    Dwarf : 1
    Minotaur : 1
    Heucuva : 1
    Gnoll : 1
    Titan : 1

Humans are popular by default as we had a failed
race ovahaul projected that started back in 2001,
and it took us until 2007 to at least put races
back into their order. They had been stripped of
their imm/res/vulns between that time period, and
most people went for humans. But even so they
    still remain a popular choice.

Wizards are the most popular by choice, but
closely followed by Gladiators, Priests and even
Sages. All feature different 'hero skills' which
make each one useful in their own right. Lich is
the least popular, though still a good class.

I did not take a sample of gender, as half the time
even the ones claiming to be female, are actually
male. If anything I'd say our male to female ratio
    is say 7 to 1.

Online Numbers Generated from 11/07/209 1:30am EST

    0 : 14 24
    1 : 13 18
    2 : 7 15
    3 : 7 18
    4 : 4 11
    5 : 3 9
    6 : 4 12
    7 : 5 8
    8 : 6 12
    9 : 5 12
    10 : 7 14
    11 : 11 19
    12 : 13 18
    13 : 11 26
    14 : 14 27
    15 : 11 20
    16 : 13 21
    17 : 13 16
    18 : 12 15
    19 : 14 19
    20 : 15 19
    21 : 14 22
    22 : 16 24
    23 : 15 19

As of the fall 2009 season on Waterdeep, our player
population is mostly Americanized with a splash of
Canadians. 8 years ago we had more players due to
a larger "foreign" crowd, namely Malayasians and
the Dutch. Average numbers was more 30 minimum
and 70+ max. But in the last several years those
groups have faded away. We still have people from
both regions, and also Norway, UK, Brazil, Eygpt and
Aussieland, but American/Canada is our main group.
You can see this influence with our current numbers.
