Is it possible to display an ascii symbol (the heart, 003 in this sitiuation) on a mud through an ansi escape sequence or other method?

Yes, if you take a look at my games website you will see that i use a whole lot of glyphs that are not part of any standard font, and all use extended ascii.

Now the trouble using extended ascii is that not all fonts share the same extended ascii glyphs so unless you find a suitable way of forcing people to use a specific font, some will never see what your trying to portray correctly.

UTF-8 / Unicode will do that reliably, but I don't think many mud clients support it.
Like lightning and thunder require time, deeds require time even after they are done, before they can be seen and heard.
