I'll start off first with what I am looking for, then I will
follow with what I bring to the table.

I am looking for an established mud, which means has been
around for at least 6 months, and has a steady player base
10+ at most any given time. An active staff is also a must.
I really am not interested in the theme or anything like
that, just finding a mud with players who will appreciate
the work I put into the game. I realize most muds like this
won't need a programmer, but there's always RL issues that
come up and a spot opens.

Now what I bring to the table: I extensive c/c++
programming knowledge (close to 10 years for C), a degree is
computers, and a job where I get paid to write C code. I
have done mud programming on and off for 4+ years. I can
translate most any idea into code if it is feasible.
Just some examples of custom things I have done (custom not
meaning idea, but programming):
1. Random Objects, Mobiles, Areas. Started off as separate
and eventually put together into a "Wilderness" type area
that loads more and more based on the number of players
online.
2. Event System. Allows the code to set things to happen
in the future, mainly used to keep track of whether a player
has too many of an item type for a given length of time.
3. Mobile based tasks: Lets a mob have a task that
consists of steps they take to complete it. Ie. taskdecap
would consist of searching, attacking, and decapitating a
player.
4. Player Houses, home guardians, player lockers.
5. Logging of characters roleplay sessions to immortals to
be rewarded at a later time if no one is available to watch
(for rp muds)
6. General Debugging skills, gdb. Able to debug most any
crash and increase the uptime of the mud. Last mud had
uptime of 20+ days if no new code was being copyed in.
7. etc.

If you meet the criteria and my skillset interests you feel
free to post here or email me at gkostanza@gmail.com.

Thanks.

My experience is that at least 99% of new startup muds fail.
Yes everyone of them has the "latest and greatest idea and
a unique highly modified codebase", but I'm not going to
spend anymore of my time working on something that will
never be able to be appreciated by players.

Define fail. I'd say at least 99% remain stale forever and never see much change or do anything 'unique'. On the other hand if fail means they don't have any amount of longevity I'd say that figures probably a lot closer to 80%, albeit still rather high.

mainly merc/GW, ROM, and SMAUG. Unless it's written in
something other than C/C++ or Java though it's not really
anything that can't be figured out.
