I tried a few muds over the years and most of them were plain text descriptions of rooms and nothing remotely graphical-esque.

Back in the day, I played a mud called Medeivia (it was #1 on mudconnector probably all the way until about 2000 when the creator started ruining it).   Medeivia had a worldmap where when you exited a zone, you would be shown a two-dimensional array of characters that looks like an actual map.  They called it the wilderness.  You could navigate around on this wilderness map to go to other zones.  The zones were denoted by single characters that represented their entrances.  Once you entered them, you would be removed from the wilderness and end up in a traditional description-based room where you would navigate to other rooms in the conventional manner.

There is only one other game I found that worked like that, and it looked pretty much exactly the same.  It was clear they were both built from the same engine.  The other game was called Blackfire, but it never really got anywhere.

Can anyone tell me of other muds that have engines that work like this?  Having a wilderness worldmap that lets you visually navigate to zones?  Or even direct me to engines.  Blackfire claimed it was built on circlemud (heavily modified), but circlemud doesn't have a wilderness feature like that as far as i know.  Am I wrong?  Maybe the wilderness code was ripped from another engine?

Thanks.

Wilderness is actually a pretty common feature among MUDs.

I can't speak to Medievia's specific version/engine/look and whatnot, but its not a rare feature by any stretch.

End of Time (a Final Fantasy / Chrono Trigger based MUD that I run) uses Wilderness.  Unfortunately I don't have a current screenshot I can share (we recently upgraded our wilderness system to use PNG image loading to generate it and I haven't done new screenshots), but here are some images of the previous map (the new one is essentially the same thing, just a bigger "view" and about 10x the size overall).

Here's a representation of what the map looks like in action:

And a night/day comparison screenshot:

I want to say Godwars II is entirely "wilderness" but I haven't played it and can't entirely vouch for it.

The system I believe is also widely used in AFK and Smaug bases as well (and in fact, the new system my game uses was adapted from Smaug's).

Some muds have wilderness maps like this. To name a few:
EmpireMUD (probably the most obvious example)

BatMUD:

Achaea:

TMC listing entries have Mapping field (for example "Mapping: Ascii, Graphical, Automapping, In-Game"). Unfortunately looks like it can't be specified as a search parameter.

Ok, I made some updated shots of the map.

This is showing three different locations at three different altitudes (airships will unlock the two higher altitudes, making travel over the 1000 x 800 map faster, along with a settable "map speed" command that is usable when riding a chocobo, using sprint shoes, sailing a boat, or flying an airship).

The first location is outside of Midgar at all three altitudes, the second is outside of Guardia Castle, and the third outside of the town of Nikeah.

Also, this is a (mostly current) PNG that our world map loads from:

Wow!  Great replies!  Thanks for the screenshots and info. :)

Are all of these muds using homebrew engines or are any of them built in something else?

In 4 Dimensions we are using the Wilderness Grid, but you need to use a Mud client to fully enjoy the spectacular sidebar maps that you get from it.

We got help from KaVir to create a plug_in for Mushclient with specific tiles for each kind of sector, but you need to download the Plug_in separately and then install it to Mushclient. Later a similar plug_in was also added to Mudlet, and in that case it gets installed together with the client as you download it.  The 11x11 room maps are displayed in the sidebar of both clients, and the views are changing as you move around, but they look a bit different depending on whether the original zone is flagged as Wilderness or not.

Without the mudclients you can get similar sized maps in game, by typing the command MAP, but of course these aren't automated, and the quality of the symbols is limited to what you can do with ascii art.

I totally love the sidebar maps myself, because they make it so much easier to orient yourself and move around, (especially if you are a dyslectic, who constantly mixes up left and right, like me).
It doesn't hurt that the maps are really pretty too.

I think quite a number of Text muds have those graphical maps by now, but I am not sure about how many, since I don't think there is a special search option for maps.

That's one of the things that I'd like to see added to the search engine of TMC, since the automated sidebar maps add a lot to the playability and feeling of a game.

EmpireMUD's codebase is based on CircleMUD (according to their credits) and is available on GitHub: https://github.com/EmpireMUD/EmpireMUD-2.0-Beta

We're based on ROM, and while we were using more ROM specific world map stuff before, our PNG loading thing is adapted from Smaug.

In War of Legend we use tiles to generate rooms, actual rooms can have multiple co-ordinates, the map utilise utf8 and 256colour, MXP to click on a location to walk to! We generally use these for Dungeons - Areas that people have to group up to complete, gaining special relic object, recipes and components.  I don't have any screen shots, but i am sure when Radyth the co-owner of the MUD sees this he will post some!

Any TBA mud (those maps suck though)
Alter Aeon has a unique one
Materia Magica has a great one
Any many more.

Materia Magica would be my pick if you want a nice game and great map.

Oh that's great Molly!
I've been looking to do that as well (we have an in-game ascii map and pop-out window, but I've been wondering on making it 'graphical').
Do you know if Richard's made his plug-in available to the public?

i think the basics for the plugin can be found on the godwars2 website. Ive not actually checked for a while though.  He originally made the test version for the mud i was testing it on for him, if its not available i will see if i can find it, im sure i have the file somewhere.
