I had put several years into my old character prior to the player wipe and I along with others had mixed feelings over saying goodbye. When it was all said and done I began to realize it's like starting a brand new novel in a series of books I enjoy. I can say now that it was a good thing and I look forward to each new moment in the new Era. My compliments go out to the cook and all his hard work! 8)

While several have posted why you should try this game, I thought I would give you a more robust answer and some details:

* The ability to have in game jobs in politics, justice, news, guides, among others.

* The ability to truly affect political, social, and religious direction based on your roleplay. This is especially true since the reset.

* Dynamic staff run events that adds to the established storyline.

* Guilds that center on Roleplay like Merchants, Traders, Shaman, and Druids. And after the reset and new era all of the guilds have a chance to modify and guide their storyline.

* Player run caravans on land and sea where you can guard or lead and earn coins and experience.

* Very helpful staff, guides, and players to assist you in your creation and development.

* Large persistent, dynamic world, with nations and oceans, islands, and cities.

* Ateraan has two starting locations (harsh and civilized). One in the Kingdom that is law abiding and easier to negotiate and the other in the uncivilized southland with slaves, servants, and conscripts with a heirarchy that is deadly. (Start in the Kindgom or Northland if you are new as the Southland is very difficult).

* Simple creation with excellent tutorial to learn commands of the game.

* Houses, Mansions, Castles, and Ships. You can sail the ocean and battle pirates, explore islands, fish, or whale. You can own a house with servants, decor, etc.

* Standard and Unique Guilds. Mages, Druids, and Fighters, as well as the unique Clerical, Thief, Merchant, Shaman, Warrior Guilds and the independant Rogues.

* Standard and Unique Races and languages. Gnomes, Humans, Elves, amongst other standard races. As well as Trolahk, Malor (dark elf type), Centaur, and Nykos among other unique types.

* Rich history and background base upon a book and incorporated into over 10 years of storyline.

* Large Ocean area for shipping, sailing, whaling, and battling pirates or monsters at sea.

* Large variety of powers, skills, abilities, armor, weapons, and artifacts.

* Numerous quests that are sewn into the storyline and completely immersed and roleplayable.

* Massive invasions where players group (dozens together) to defend areas and AI driven enemies.

* The ability to do things not related to adventuring like fishing, farming, mining, panning for gold and silver, crabbing, whaling, trapping, and even guarding caravans.

These things and more you can do on Ateraan where the only thing limiting you is your imagination.

Thought I'd give a little log of some roleplay from the Dahk faith. I had fun writing this for the guild and the people who joined did amazing in their part too! Bit of a long read, too.

Quote
"Good evening, Brothers and Sisters. Tonight is a night of ritual, of
ceremony. Where those of us who have been blessed during the beginning new era
are bound together in blood for our Lord." Rykio begins as she steps around the
altar, making eye contact with different people throughout the gathering,
"Together we will make our oath in service to Him, grow and strengthen in
unison."

Rykio steps behind the altar, hands stretching out over the smooth ebony and
marbled surface. Her eyes focus upon it as she speaks up, "While many will
follow in our footsteps, at this moment, we are all that are, those that came
before us lost to time and mystery. Together we will sing our praise to the
Lord and let Him know that He has not made a mistake in blessing us all with
His power. He will indeed be proud of us this night."

Dipping a hand into her pack, Rykio produces first a skull, a pristine human
skull, cleaned and bleached from time underneath the harsh suden sun. She
carefully sets this upon the altar as she speaks, "The Skull. The very strength
of our Lord, the hammer of His might and will. His arm and His wrath."

Rykio slips her hand within the black pouch at her hip, slowly lifting an
intact yet fragile skin from a serpent, the shed portions flaking and appearing
to crumble upon the slightest breeze. As she continues to speak, she winds the
skin around the skull slowly, tucking it in a neat coil, "The Serpent. The eyes
of our Lord. To work unseen, neither the voice or the hand to avenge. Always
lurking, always waiting, moving unseen to do His will."

Once more Rykio's hand slips into the hidden depths of her pouch and this
time she produces, five sleek feathers, the inky hues reflecting its inner blue
hues as it catches the light from the torches. With her chin held high she
calls out just a bit louder, "The Raven. The one who caws of His coming. The
voice of our Lord. His word. His wisdom." With one swift movement, she shoves
the feathers between the jaw of the skull.

Respectful and silent, Zivai observes the ritual beginning with an attentive
gaze.

Alvah watches in silence and grins.

Rykio is silent as she moves now, stepping away from the altar toward the
nearest torch. She sets fire to a slender black candle, its flame sparking and
hissing until a dark blue, near black hue flickers to life. She returns to
where she stood, dripping wax steadily behind the skull until she is able to
stick the candle to the surface of the altar. Finally she speaks, "A black
flame candle. Symbolic for Him. Divinity."

Inros's eyes follow Rykio's movements, his hands clasped loosely in front of
him.

But for a subtle lean to get a better angle for observation, Valthrein
remains still and silent.

Salafian appears pensive as he watches Rykio move.

Long sticks of incense are then plucked out of her pouch, Rykio lights them
one by one by the candle's black flame while her voice rises up once again,
"The scent of cypress, to strengthen our spirit and resolve. Devotion." She
carefully places the first stick, wedging it between the skull and snake skin
and onto the next, "Cedar, to strengthen the body and vitality. Determination."
A third is lit after the second is tucked away and she concludes, "And Myrrh.
To strengthen the mind and stabilize emotions. Dominance."

Rykio lifts her chin as she chants, her words loud and proud, her
enthusiastic and sweet tones replaced by ones of power and purpose, "We call to
Him, our Lord of Darkness, To let His shadow guide us. Piercing through the
veil of light, May His tendrils of power enshroud. And we, the darkened
children of Dahkoar, shall worship Him as the one True God."

Alvah repeats the last few words in prayer, and continues to watch.

Rykio's gaze glides across all in attendance, sharing the moment as silence
settles. With a smile, she produces the two final items from her pouch, a large
goblet carved from ebony wood, the inside stained with a slicker substance, the
aspects of Dahkoar carved into its outer surface. As she places the goblet
behind the lit candle, she raises up the other item above her head, an obsidian
carved athame, "With this goblet, we shall declare our oath. Our blood will
mingle, becoming one. Together, tonight, we shall grow stronger for Him."

"With this offering, I pledge myself in eternal service to Our Lord, to the
one True God, Dahkoar. Bound in this life and whatever lies beyond." Rykio
preaches and without further prompting she rolls up the sleeve of her robe and
slices across her inside forearm with one quick slash, blood beading
immediately. She lifts her arm above the goblet, letting several drops trickle
within before she steps back, "Now all of you, one by one, rise and speak your
oath as you bleed for our Lord."

Rykio repeats herself as she gazes out across the Temple, "Rise and speak
your oath."

"With this offering I pledge my eternal service. I pledge myself to Dahkoar,
the one true god. Lord of Shadows. My Lord. I am bound to him now and always.
Nothing will undo my oath," Azorius says.

Zivai rises to make her oath.

Salafian lifts his head and moves towards the goblet. As he moves he pushes
his vestments out of the way of his wrist before taking his pendant and using a
pointed edge craves a small "V". Blood slipping from the wound he allows it to
drip into the goblet as he says, "I pledge myself to Dahkoar, the One True God,
the God to whom all  lesser deities submit. Should I ever falter or fail in my
duty, may I be slain and cast to the vultures without honor or grace."

Salafian moves back into the gathering and away from the goblet.

Azorius walks up after Salafian, allowing his High Priest to go before him.
He drags the blade down his forearm, leaving a long bloody cut that spews blood
into the goblet.

Rykio's lips curl into a pleased smile as she watches the clergy take their
own oaths as she had.

Nael approaches the altar in solemn silence. His hand shivers slightly, but
that is stilled by the firm grip on the dagger. "I pledge myself to Him. Body
and soul, in life and death, it matters not. I am His tool." With that, the
dagger is roughly dragged across his wrist, and soon drips of his blood follow
to join the rest.

Azorius takes a step back and stands beside Salafian.

Taking his turn in the queue, Valthrein steps forward and with care and
reverence, lifts the athame in his right hand. He eyes his palm a moment, then
gives a minute shake of the head and brings the blade's edge to his wrist.
Swift and sure, he makes a slice, accompanied by a brief hiss of pain and his
lower lip caught between his teeth. "Upon my blood I solemnly and sincerely
swear," he intones, "my life to you, Dahkoar. On raven's wing, with serpent's
eye and skull's grim spectre looming, I am yours, bound by word, blood and life
itself." He sets the athame back down and makes way for the next.

Alvah steps closer to the goblet, as watches the Blood drip into the goblet
from his brothers and sisters , he slices his left arm and utters, "With this
blood, I offer myself to the Dark Lord, To my Brothers and Sisters, and to the
shadows, be eternally dark, and full of terrors for those that don't follow His
Path. I give my life to the service of the Lord Dahkoar for eternity and
beyond." He puts his arm over the goblet, letting his blood drip.

Valthrein does this after a moment of letting his life's blood drip into the
goblet, of course.

Alvah steps back into the gathering.

While not the first, Zivai steps up as it is the calling. A delicate hand
works at removing the loop that keeps her sleeve in place upon her hand, and
then she draws it up, revealing her arm. "With this sacrifice, my service to
Dahkoar is bound, now and forever. My soul is joined in His Darkness eternally,
His will is my command, His glory my goal, His dominion what I strive to teach.
Bound to Him, and to all of you, as a servant of the One True God. In life, in
death, and in however He deems me after." Accepting the ceremonial weapon in
due course, she makes a swift slice of her arm - likely too deep, for
immediately copious beads of blood begin to spill forth. She guides some into
the goblet, and then clutches her arm, a hissing sound filling the temple,
briefly, as the bleeding slows, but does not stop.

Inros stands from the bench and moves towards the altar, bowing his head
briefly and then lifting it once more to make his oath heard, "My body, my
soul, everything I have to offer is for the Lord. His will is my path, forever
more and even in the beyond." Carefully taking the dagger into his grip, he
makes a quick cut upon his forearm and holds it over the altar to allow the
blood droplets mix with the rest. After a few moments, he steps back and
murmurs a prayer under his breath.

Even as the blood drips from the slice upon her arm and splatters upon the
ground, Rykio shows no hesitance or pain as she chants, "We pour ourselves into
this goblet, the vessel for His blessings. Destroy our weakness from within, to
conform to our Lord's tenets. For this perfection of our new lives, may we
become His true servants."

Rykio gathers the goblet between her hands and slowly she swirls the combined
bloods of all races and backgrounds, together as one they mix into the blood of
the Chosen of Dahkoar. She lifts the goblet above her head, "Praise be to the
Lord." she calls out loudly before she brings the goblet to her lips. She takes
but a small drink, a small offering as the leader of the faith before she turns
to pour it upon the altar, soaking the skull, the snakeskin, the feathers,
extinguishing the incense one by one so that their smoldering embers mixes into
the potent blood of the clerics of the Lord.

Zivai's expression is not so serene, a furrow of pain marking her brow, but
she does not hesitate - does not complain nor falter in her observance of the
ritual. Bowing her head, she closes her eyes in reverence.

"The Skull. The Serpent. The Raven. Divinity, Devotion, Determination,
Dominance. These are the Chosen aspects, the Tenets that we dedicate our lives
to uphold." Rykio calls out in a quieter tone, reverently bowing her head
before the altar, "Accept this Our Sacrifice. Praise be to the Dark Lord."

Inros bows his head in deference towards the altar and says loudly, "Praise
to Dahkoar and His Shadows, may His domain strengthen this night and forever
more."

Rykio grasps at the candle, yanking it upwards as she chants once more, the
words melding together as she calls upon the power of the Lord, His essence
flowing through her as she tilts the powered black flame toward the combined
blood upon the altar.

Salafian glances at his wrist and then back to Rykio, "Praise be to Lord
Dahkoar."

Nael does seem to keep that blood-streaked fist clenched rather tightly. He
offers no words, but simply lowers his head.

A steady dripping comes as Valthrein's own cut continues to bleed onto the
toe of his boot. His lower lip remains caught in his teeth, as it was since he
made the incision save for when he spoke his oath. Still, his hands fold before
him. "Praise him, for he is first and truest before all others and all else,"
comes his contribution to the prayer.

Alvah face lights up, as he witnesses the blood being poured, and says a
small prayer, "For the Lord". Going back to silence.
-
Azorius watches the blood as it stains the altar. "Praise be to our Lord."

Jarek closes his eyes with a small grin on his face, "Praise be to Him".

Rykio calls out louder once more, a proud smile upon her lips, "Praise be to
the Lord Dahkoar!" As the flame touches upon the powered blood of the clergy,
rather than extinguish as one would imagine, the entire altar is cast into
dark, sickly flames. The torches of the Temple flare to life to mimic before
all at once all light in its entirety is cast out, the Temple cast into
unnatural darkness.

For but a heartbeat, that darkness remains, constricting and thick in the
air, but just as quickly as it had arrived, it is dispersed. The torches
throughout the temple flicker back to life, their dim glow filling the Temple
with shadows once more, yet the altar is empty and bare as it was before Rykio
began.

Inros glances around the Temple for a moment and the corners of his lips curl
into a smile as he looks back to Rykio, "That was a truly blessed event and I
thank you for heading it, High Priestess."

Rykio leans against the altar to steady herself before she lifts her gaze to
smile radiantly to all those gathered, "And we, the Chosen of this new Era, we
are bound. I thank you all for coming."

Zivai opens her eyes, looking down at her hand - which is by now rather
dripping with the steady flow of her blood. Though she does not speak her
praise to the Lord, it is there, in her eyes and in her manners, the dark grey
flecked with green as she stares at the flame that bursts to life, and then
dies, leaving a calm darkness and silence. The main sound that of the slow
dripping of the various wounds that are left to bathe the temple in their
sanguine essense. As the light returns, she bows her head at the High
Priestess, respectfully.

Salafian bows his head before Rykio and then the altar as vision returns to
him with the burning of the torches. He says politely, "Thank you High
Priestess."

Azorius claps his bloody hands together as he sees the ceremony coming to an
end. "Simply fantastic! We should do this more often."

As Alvah witnesses the altar empty once more he declares, "Lord Dahkoar, we
will follow you unto eternal bliss. May the shadows always be in our path"

Inros places his hand upon the opposite arm and whispers a quiet prayer.

Alvah says to Rykio, "Thank you, High Priestess."

Zivai brings her fingers to her lips, now, a curious expression on her face.
Licking the blood, she makes a face. "No. Still don't like it," is all she
offers before she finally binds the wound with the sleeve of her robe.

->Rykio laughs in delight, if in a bit of a strained tone, "It was a blessed
event. All of us together. Marvelous."

So I’ve been postponing writing anything on this thread because I wanted to give it a fair review, and I’ve had a lot of mixed emotions regarding it all. As one of the players of a character that’s gone down into the lore of the game, I was really upset at first to learn that I was in fact not getting my character that I had spent years roleplaying and building, back. Staff had been pretty quiet on what the event was leading too and I honestly thought I had just thrown my character away for some roleplay event that wasn’t going to change anything.

The event itself was AWESOME. It was well put together and played out, and drew the players into some intense roleplay. I sat on another character I had for over half of it (after my main character was killed) and I saw some amazing roleplay happening as people wanted to find out what was going to happen at the end.

Personally I hate the idea of a playerwipe. I feel like things could have been done differently and changes could have been put in without it. Yes some of those changes would have staff working overtime and having to go through likely every single file, but players wouldn’t have lost years of good and fun roleplay.

But with saying that, I do realize that the game needed a new beginning and fresh face. While I’ve always loved the game, my characters and the other players, things were slowly becoming more and more stagnant, and it was something felt by the players. The event that happened brought out a lot of good roleplay from everyone that I hadn’t seen in a long time from people. And with the playerwipe, it’s brought a new start and liveliness as we all flock to new or old guilds and stir up new roleplay avenues.

Going forward, it’ll probably always sting a little when I look at the lore, and as much as I’ll miss my characters and the roleplay that I had with other characters, I’m going to focus on the good that’s come out of it. And if anyone is curious as to what that good is, log on and find out.  ;)

I must say, your skill and dedication in maintaining such a wide variety of distinct personalities is most impressive.

On a serious note, I like what I'm seeing with the post-event changes.  Playerwipe removes (at least temporarily) the issue of certain PCs receiving preferential treatment - before the wipe, my character had a couple targets she wanted to take down ICly, but knowing OOC that they belonged to staff dissuaded me from even bothering in the attempt.  (Standing little chance against an established foe is one thing, but knowing one's efforts are guaranteed futile is another thing entirely.)  From what I'm reading elsewhere in the thread, the new areas that you have Totally Been Working On I Swear are actually implemented now, which is nothing but good.  Also, it seems guildmasters have much more control over their guild?  I'll have to keep going to be sure, but if things are as they sound this should also prove to be a good thing.

Finally... from everything I've seen, staff is approachable and helpful (you included), and only rude to rude people.  New Worlds is decently run, it's active, and it's newbie friendly.  All in all, it's gonna be worth me at least checking out what's new.
