In search of a good mush
« on: November 08, 2017, 12:28 PM »
Hi everyone. I used to play on quite a few mushes throughout the years, some long forgotten, some probably living in infamy forever (hello Firan). While I still have a few characters on a few mushes, everything has been become terribly quiet in recent years. I'm particularly saddened by the near-demise of the Game of Thrones-themed and somewhat unfortunately named "Game of Bones" which was thriving when I joined but is now pretty moribund. The other GoT-themed mush whose name I shall not name is more active but the micro-managing admin long squeezed every bit of joy from it. I miss the roleplay itself but I also miss the kind of community feeling I got from logging into places daily and chat and joke with people that were almost friends.

I know this is mudconnect and not mushconnect, but I'm hoping that perhaps someone out there has a few suggestions for fairly active games, ideally mushes that are heavy on RP and not so heavy on code or suggestions where I could try and find one.  I'm mostly interested in games that are based on some sort of pop culture like Game of Thrones, Star Wars, Firefly/Serenity and so on as I find it hard to get my head around completely fictional new worlds, especially when I don't know if it's worth the effort or the game will die again after a few months (which I've had happen more than once). But I'd take a completely new world too, as long as it's no too out there - medieval fantasy-light stuff or, at a pinch, science-fiction prefered.

If you liked Firan, I'd suggest trying out Arx instead: http://play.arxgame.org/

Original theme, light-fantasy medieval that is a long, slow build towards high-fantasy. Has a lot of code that is Firan-like, but none of Firan's weirder code or theme-policies.

Hey Snowqueen,

Please give us a try over at Castle Marrach. We could qualify as either a MUSH or an RPI-MUD depending on where you draw that line (we started as a pure MUSH but over years have added basic combat and crafting systems). If you were playing a GoT-similar MUSH before, this might be right up your alley:

Quote
"The story intensive Medieval Fantasy MUD based on Arthurian mythology, now finally free to play. You awaken in a strange land ruled by an elven Queen, a land eternally Winter where mention of Summer is Treason. It is a land of rivaling noble houses, chivalrous knights, beautiful damsels, powerful magi, scheming politicians and daring rogues. Mystery, intrigue and romance combine in the stories of Castle Marrach.

Castle Marrach is a game of roleplaying, socialization, and storytelling set in the feudal medieval realm of Marrach, the land of Eternal Winter ruled over by the elven Queen Vivienne.

You take on the role of a character within Castle Marrach, freshly arrived in the mysterious land with no memory, trying to discover your purpose while learning the lore of your new surroundings. It is said the High Elven Queen Vivienne plucked you from your former life and brought you here to forge a new life within Her Realm. In this new life you are given a clean slate to become a new person, the person you were always meant to be, be it chivalrous Knight, skilled crafter, powerful mage or wicked villain.

In Castle Marrach you will be able to socialize with hundreds of other characters, each playing their own role within the Castle. Duelists, Watchmen, courtiers, seamstresses, carpenters, and poets are just some of the many people you will meet.

At heart, the game of Castle Marrach is about stories. StoryPlotters within the community manage the largest epics of the Castle with regularly released plotlines run by Skotos Staff, but each and every player, including you, also has the opportunity to tell their own stories within the Castle."
