Anyone doing sorting the inventory?
« on: September 09, 2017, 7:03 PM »
Hello:
I was wondering if anyone did any kind of sorting in their inventory commands?  Maybe you sort the items by type of item they are or by where they are worn?  I've been contemplating doing it by item type as opposed to where it was worn.  Maybe then even adding parsing to the inventory commands to show the inventory by whatever variable they use.

Just wondering if anyone does something like this now and if they have any feedback on implementation.

We do this on d20mud.  It's an optional command: Like 'inventory armor' shows all armor pieces, 'inventory weapons', etc.

Now that you mention this it sounds like it'd be a neat feature to do an actual order sorting, like most MMOs do.  And allow people to specify the sorting criteria.

On LO, there's an option with the inventory command to move a specific item to the top or the bottom of the inventory list - 'inventory <thing> top|bottom'.  That's enough to let you sort your list if you want to, without having to drop stuff and pick it up again.  You can also assign private labels to anything in your inventory to unambiguously name an item even if it moves around in the inventory-  'label 2.bag supplies'  'put apple supplies' for example.  That makes keeping items with the same names in a particular inventory order way less important.
