I initially thought that any paying company would have to be careful about internships but if the CEO is going to say they've done their due diligience than you have to take them at their word. If you don't believe them you can always contact OHSA or another agency regarding workers rights and report them for review if you feel strongly about the situation.

PS - I do actually believe that if you believe there is a legal issue with a game and the staff seem to think there is none that you should report it. So I am not baiting you with that suggestion.

Well, they do, yeah, at least in the US. There's a bunch of ways to properly work with volunteers without falling afoul of employment law, and a bunch of ways to do it that do violate the law. Like most things related to the law, it's all very bound up in the details of a particular situation. I'm not an attorney though, and this isn't something I have to deal with much (unlike IP law), so I don't have much to say about the legal ins and outs of it - that's what we pay our law firm for.

Exactly you say you have a law firm, I have no reason to disbelieve you, especially not as a company which operates as a profitable enterprise. So I'm sold.

Maybe it's a super-shady law firm though?! ;)

Well, technically, it's not exactly that easy. I must call out some examples here. Highest I've seen is 15 million paid to volunteers, UO also paid to volunteers in court. Other companies had similar with unpaid interns and volunteers.

There are surely plenty of MMO and video game based companies that still use volunteers. But as a former community manager who has worked 7 years in the AAA industry, pursuing volunteer programs is a pretty high risk for the business, especially if you are approaching recruiting volunteers similar to that of a paid position.

While it's true, the way you handle the volunteers is the biggest factor. Obviously, if you have two parts, one is paid that is doing similar work to your volunteers and then those who are doing similar and not being paid, then you run a very high risk no matter how well you think you are covered. Hence why so many volunteer programs in the industry stopped after these lawsuits settled.
