Seeking Input - Final Fantasy & Chrono Trigger
« on: September 06, 2013, 3:34 PM »
Since End of Time is in a bit of a lull right now with our logins, and on the heels of some balance adjustments, we have come up against a few things that at the beginning of the design of parts of the game world and structure that wasn't really anticipated.  Likewise, roleplay has yet to really start in earnest yet, so other than an extensive background and mapped out timeline, there's not much to interfere with while revisiting some of these things.  I don't want to get too much into specifics here, as I'm looking really more for general feedback from people who are fans of the old SNES console RPGs, particularly the Final Fantasy and Chrono series.

1) If you are familiar with that era of JRPGs, what game do you personally have a greater awareness of, Final Fantasy 4 (released as FF2 in the US) or Chrono Trigger?  What is your opinion of the general awareness of both of the games versus one another?

2) If you were coming into a game with the FF/CT theme, what would your expectation be of a clan/government based on Baron from FF4?  ie: good, evil, neutral

3) If you were coming into a game with the FF/CT theme, what would your expectation be of a clan/government based on Guardia from CT?  ie: good, evil, neutral

4) If you were coming into a game with this theme, which clan/government would you personally find more appealing, a good aligned Guardia themed clan/government that Baron was a subkingdom or territory of, or a good aligned Baron themed clan/government that Guardia was a subkingdom or territory of?

Any input or feedback would be greatly beneficial.  Like I said, activity is a bit low right now with the player base, so a sampling from the player base is a slim prospect at the moment... and a more "neutral" or "outsider" input would be helpful too, because part of the thought process is determining what might be more beneficial toward new players familiar with the themes.

RP encouraged.

Generally RP is required for clan membership and player killing (unless the parties involved are consensual).

Our PK System has a general 7 level range where anyone within that range may be attacked.  If you "opt-in", then any one else who has also "opted-in" will be lootable.  Otherwise, non opt-in PK will end in the loser being knocked unconscious and not really "killed."

Any other questions, I'd be happy to answer.

Alright, disclaimer: I don't know anything about anything, so take my advice with a grain of salt. I also don't know anything about your specific questions.

But, you say your rp is JRPG based, and it's roleplay encouraged. I haven't visited your place, but I would hope that the place has individualized gear. If it's stat based and your equipment is really important, we should at least be able to change how it looks, even if it does the same stats. I can't tell you how much it kills me to join a place, have a solid character concept in my head, and then have to wear the same rainbow newbie crap as every other newbie. No matter if I'm making Batman, Leatherface or Ricky Martin, we're all using the same gear, and we're so dependent and reliant on it.

So, I would hope you allow for more individuality, especially if something is more Japanese based. I mean, Japanese rpgs are like the epitome of style over substance, where the guy with the Gunblade is more dangerous than the guy with the actual gun.

But, that's just me.

Valid concerns, of course.  The ability to customize equipment is certainly on almost any game a highly sought after perk because, afterall, most players seem very content on style and their aesthestic.

But on the same token, just because Crono is wearing a ruby vest, Edgar has a pair of sprint shoes and diamond armor, the core of what you see of a character isn't being changed by what they have on.

It's a pretty well established convention on many MUDs that encourage roleplay while simultaenously having stat based equipment that is important to the survival of the character that you pay more attention to the player written description than the equipment they are wearing.

That said, winning immortal ran quests and collecting quest points are the means through which a player may restring equipment to suit their aesthetic.  Doing it in this way helps encourage the participation of quests, the collection of quest points, gives an ability to control that aspect of your aesthetic, while also making the moderate rarity of being able to do so prevent everyone from running around with full restrung sets of equipment, and the rarity makes standing out from the crowd with restrings even more attractive otherwise.  Everyone able to fully customize their strings, in my mind, cheapens the ability to do so.  It would really seem to devalue having equipment in the first place, or would seem to lend itself toward having a system of being able to purchase or find stat boosts that existed independent of an otherwise completely aesthetic only system of clothing.

There's been discussion and ideas of adding in ways of modifying equipment, however, probably restrictive to "generic" equipment such as "an iron breastplate" or "a pair of mythril greaves" or what-have-you, but would involve at least being able to modify color and some of the string.  Or even adding in crafting that could either break down "an iron breastplate" into iron and the materials to fashion a breastplate, or gather the materials needed to make one, then combine with other elements to fashion a customized iron breastplate that may have a bit fancier of a string with other aspects of it more aesthetically pleasing.  But, it hasn't made it past discussion at this point.

As someone who runs around the Fallout games in often times a trenchcoat, cowboy hat, a pair of sunglasses and a shotgun when I could be far more protected and stronger in a set of Enclave Power Armor with a plasma rifle, I do get where you are coming from, though.
