Title: www.mudportal.com
Post by: plamzi on August 13, 2013, 8:34 AM
Hi Everyone,

I'd like to announce the birth of The MUD Portal!

(http://www.mudportal.com/images/Promo1.png) (http://www.mudportal.com)

I would like The MUD Portal to be a site that helps new players discover MUDs and enables veterans of the genre to "game socially" at home or when on the move. My focus is turning the portal web app into an easy-to-use web-based client with increasingly advanced features. Already, with near-0 effort, MUD admins can begin to deep-link to the web app (explained here) and provide their players with a sleek web client that works on tablets as well.

Also, we are allowing users to customize their web app from inside the web browser. And trusted developers can customize the app for all their players using a straightforward plugin format. How cool is that?

If you would like to contribute to The MUD Portal (http://www.mudportal.com) in a more serious shape or fashion, such as helping with the site/app coding, promotion, or forum administration, just let me know.

The link leads to http://www.mudportal.coml as opposed to http://www.mudportal.com

The banners don't display right on chrome either, I uploaded a screenshot (http://i.imgur.com/iNSEfCm.jpg) to show what I mean.

@Community Management Team and/or Icculus: Might be useful to raise the max attachment size, currently it's 128 KB, which is miniscule, that screenshot was 159 KB (and as such too large for it to let me upload it) despite being saved as a .jpg.

I understand the point is to save hard drive space, but that seems a bit excessive since it'd still take 6,595 such pictures to take up 1 GB of space.

I'd be highly interested in a web-based client that can get around blocked ports at work. *cough* Not that I'd do that, right?

Can't reproduce the issue you're showing in latest Chrome. I tried different zoom factors, too. Could be just a bad page load due to network issues? What happens when you reload the page?

Appears that it was, just reloaded the page and it isn't doing it anymore, though it's not the same banners this time either, but not sure why it'd be specific to individual banners.

What does game socially mean?  Logging in to chat?

Chat may be one aspect, if people want it. Other stuff may include sharing some of your gaming preferences and activities on your profile to help others discover the games you like, exchanging tips & strategies with people who already share your interests, following the growth of certain games, etc.

One big aspect that is almost guaranteed to happen first (working on it right now) would be sharing customizations of the web app. Imagine that someone comfortable with coding publishes a plugin that drives the Group module in your favorite game. You will then automatically get the option to use this plugin, and you can exchange ideas with its author.

In Other News:

* The MUD Portal web app has been re-themed to fit snugly into the site template.

* We now have a working framework for users who want to make web app customizations. That is, anyone can tinker, or contribute seriously to customize the app for themselves, or their players. And everything is done right in the browser. Read more! (http://www.mudportal.com/index.php/forum/site-app-support/10-how-to-develop-plugins-for-the-web-app#91)

* We have working examples of plugins that are actually in use. One of them adds basic MXP support.

More News (and updated OP)

It's time to take advantage! If you're a game admin, list your game on TMP or deep-link directly to your very own web app (as explained in the OP).

Time for the players to also take interest. For I have just released the Game Center, a module that allows registered users to create multiple game profiles, each with its own set of macros and triggers. Triggers and macros support wildcards. Simple macros will appear as Quick Buttons on a sortable panel (see screenshot).

The MXP plugin has also been improved.

Good evening!

Two weeks into the life of the site, the Portal web app has the best MXP (clickable elements) support of any browser app, XTERM 256-color support, and is perfectly usable on iOS tablets (Android users should try and holler).

A graphical status bar plugin can now be seen at work when you select Bedlam in the MUD Portal Game Center. It would be easy for your favorite game to start using this and other great plugins in the pipeline, so start bugging the right people!

(http://www.mudportal.com/images/MistyBars.png) (http://www.mudportal.com)

Last but not least, game admins can add a web app link in two lines:

Code: [Select]
    <a href="http://www.mudportal.com/play?host=<<GAME-HOSTNAME>>&port=<<GAME-PORT>>">
    <img src="http://www.mudportal.com/images/play.png"></a>

Those who are moving away from the term "MUD" in promoland can use:

Code: [Select]
    <a href="http://www.cloudgamer.org/play?host=<<GAME-HOSTNAME>>&port=<<GAME-PORT>>">
    <img src="http://www.cloudgamer.org/images/play.png"></a>

Your game doesn't have to be listed for the TMP Play button to work and bring awesome.

But if your game *is* listed, you and your players will be able to enhance your online game experience via plugins, not to mention the exposure.

New features:

* ANSI background color support, speedier color processing

* UTF-8 (Unicode) support

* Maximize window, increase / decrease font

New plugins:

ChatterBox

Flexible and well-commented plugin that builds a tabbed box for redirecting all kinds of input. Ideal for chat (see updated OP screenshot). The example published to portal users shows how to use RegEx to capture a dozen channels.

iFrame

Display your own content (e. g. web-based help files or a who is online list) in a UI window. Supports easy adding of a hide / show icon to the main window. Supports refreshing the content (e. g. polling a who list) at a given interval.

New features:

* You can now list a game in progress that can be left in an unpublished state. You will be the only one who sees it listed in Game Center.

* UI windows snap to one another. Window management improvements.

* New event hooks for more plugin options. Improvements to core plugins for ease of use, and for adding control icons to the Scroll View toolbar.
Title: JujuMapper: Open Beta!
Post by: plamzi on October 02, 2013, 1:35 AM
(http://www.mudportal.com/images/PromoMapper2.png)

JujuMapper is a powerful vector-based plugin for the MUD Portal cloud app (http://www.mudportal.com/play) that can handle even nutty non-Euclidean worlds. It is now in open beta and loads on the app page. It can be used by game admins and players alike, with the game admin's maps becoming automatically available to their players.

Unlike other mappers, Juju does not require coding skills to use. When game devs and tech-y players lay the foundation, everyone else playing via the cloud app will benefit automatically.

The "never-feel-lost" sensation and click-to-move to nearby rooms completely transform the gameplay experience.

A lot more is coming in terms of flexibility and customize-ability.

Hello MUD Admins,

This is a reminder of the many free resources made available to you on The MUD Portal - Home. Things you can do:

1. In a few minutes, enhance your official game site with a polished Flash-free web-based client with tons of features (including best-in-its-class MXP):
Code: [Select]
<a href="http://www.mudportal.com/play?host=SERVER-HOSTNAME&port=SERVER-PORT"
 style="cursor: pointer">
<img src="http://www.mudportal.com/images/play.png"></a>

2. Submit an official listing for your game on the site and have your game appear in the web app's Game Center as well as in various other places on the site.

3. Once listed, make use of a wide variety of pre-built modules to create a state-of-the-art custom web app in a fraction of the time. For example, something like this (http://www.mudportal.com/play?host=mud.playbedlam.com&port=9000&name=Bedlam).

4. Receive prompt support for your web-app related coding adventures, request new features.

And, of course, players are also very welcome. The web app has matured to a point where it rivals the best desktop clients. And the best part is, you don't have to be a scripting guru to use its advanced features.

There's a support forum article (http://www.mudportal.com/forum/site-app-support/10-how-to-develop-for-the-web-app) on how to develop, and publish when ready. For most of the goodies, look under "User Menu" -> "Articles & Files". Under "Examples" you'll find a number of files. Some have the code of the plugin itself, with in-line comments. Others, marked with "-Init", show how to call a plugin on your app page.

The support forum also has info on how to get started with JujuMapper (http://www.mudportal.com/forum/site-app-support/22-jujumapper-open-beta).

I'll be expanding documentation upon request. There's a lot out there, so at first I'll need to focus on things that people are actually using.

Quick update:

* New module, LoginPrompt (http://www.mudportal.com/forum/api-documentation/37-api-loginprompt), allows you to add a fast and easy cool-looking login dialog. It's a good example of what you can do with the Modal helper module.

* More configuration options (http://www.mudportal.com/forum/api-documentation/29-api-config) let you control better how the app looks to your players. For example, the "solo" parameter lets them use Game Center's features but only lists your game and its profiles.

* App windows can now be collapsed down to their toolbar and their state saving for registered users has been improved.

* API Documentation has begun and already covers a fair bit of ground: http://www.mudportal.com/forum/api-documentation .

* Many under-the-hood improvements toJujuMapper (http://www.playbedlam.com/images/maps/big_map_of_garathorm.png), including faster path-finding for click-to-move.

Games that do interesting things with the app API, MXP, or any other "beyond telnet" features, have a very good shot at being featured more or less permanently on the homepage.

The MUD Portal (http://www.mudportal.com) is a cloud app whose goal is to make you forget to install Mudlet on your next machine.

If you are a MUD admin without a sleek and sexy web app who is able to copy and paste two lines (http://www.mudportal.com/forum/tutorials/12-how-to-link-to-the-web-app), the MUD Portal's goal is to make you ashamed of yourself!

Quick update:

* Game Center now includes a folder with the complete current listing of games from mudconnect.com. Even if a game is not listed on TMP, players will be able to access it, save profiles for it, and customize their experience.

* Based on excellent feedback from an RPI admin, added a multi-line input option that will make writing in-game mail or editing long descriptions oh so much nicer.

* Smart copy and paste in ScrollView. Ability to download a log file at any moment with one click.

* ANSI Italics now supported.

* API documentation added for MistyBars (http://www.mudportal.com/forum/api-documentation/61-api-mistybars).

* You can now easily override the default processing functions for JujuMapper and MistyBars (http://www.mudportal.com/forum/api-documentation/61-api-mistybars). For instance, you can configure them to listen to MSDP instead of GMCP and parse the data any way you need.

* Docking custom tabs now supported by all windows, not just ChatterBox.

Who says your game doesn't have its own mobile app?

If your mobile browser is logged into the portal, any macros and triggers for the game will be auto-loaded.

Granted, native apps are more capable. But this is currently the only mobile app (I know of) that has MXP support. And you can't beat the part where you get it with 0 effort!

* Tested on iPhone iOS7. Test on other phones, report issues, and win bonus points.

* Tablet support is currently limited.

I'd like to give this thread a quick bump.

I feel that any dev who cares about improving the user experience should take a serious look at the tools that mudportal.com offers. It's getting to be a very mature and solid, absolutely free, offering and I think more people (other than myself) should be doing more great things with it! The API documentation (http://www.mudportal.com/forum/api-documentation) is growing, and the GitHub repo (https://github.com/plamzi/MUDPortal-Web-App) of the source code is kept relatively up to date.

If you are considering customizing a web client but have specific concerns or reservations, don't hesitate to share them either here or on the TMP forums.

If you are a player, next time you're stuck on a computer where you don't have your favorite MUD client installed, just try your home mud through the mudportal app--I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

New Features:

+ MXP frames (depicted)
+ MSDP improved support
+ A toolbar for window management (depicted)

Lots of fixes and too many small improvements to list here.

We've had some active devs customizing the app via MXP & MSDP, and using the modular API to add graphical elements. Why aren't you?

Players: it's time to try a MUD client born on this side of the millennium!

(http://www.mudportal.com/images/PromoToolbar.png) (http://www.mudportal.com)

P. S.
If you're a dev and you're nervous about investing time in a cloud app, don't be. First, I'll never throw away many days of good work. Second, you can do "Save Page As" every day if you want, and keep local copies of your scripts. Third, the app code is already on GitHub.

In preparation to wreak Havoc (https://github.com/plamzi/Havoc), the modal plugins for the Portal app have been upgraded. They can now display MXP content, accept user input, display appropriate error messages, and can be invoked via GMCP / JSON from the server.

In practice, this means that you can build complete interaction flows layered on top of your main UI by using only server-side code (no JS skills / mudportal.com customizations needed).

Some announcements:

* We're now running the latest and greatest CMS version, which includes version control for all your articles and web app customization scripts. Screenshot below.

* The Getting Started Guide (http://www.mudportal.com/forum/tutorials/10-getting-started) has been updated with a simple 7-step tutorial that shows you how to begin customizing your app.

It's never been easier to tap into the resources of the site to make your game better faster. I'm usually around in the Game Center chat channels and happy to answer questions.

The MUD Portal is now even more social than it was yesterday (not to mention the day before yesterday).

Use your existing Facebook, Google, Twitter, or GitHub account to log in.

If you still don't wanna, use the new /name | /nick command in chat to give yourself a temporary nick. Or just go by "guest", we don't care!

As long as you enjoy playing your favorite games socially, on a 21st Century client.

(http://www.mudportal.com/images/promo/mudportal-soclogin-promo.png) (http://www.mudportal.com)

P. S.
FYI, Twitter auth seems to be the worst of these. First, Twitter asks you for permission to post on your behalf, which the Portal site would never do. Then you're still asked to fill in a registration form because the details it shares are slim. I guess the only benefit is then you can just use your Twitter credentials.

A new voting system is now live. At this time, only registered users can vote, and can rate multiple games once every 24 hrs. I'm not sure yet when and if votes will be reset, etc. Depending on use (or abuse :) as it were), I will make adjustments. The goal is to try something different and not to end up with a list that never changes.

Feedback & suggestions welcome. (This includes any other suggestions on how to promote the site & app better.)

Also, players & admins are welcome!

Some folks are starting to give the MUDPortal mapper plugin a closer look, so I've made some key enhancements to lower the entry barrier:

* You will now notice a little globe icon appear in your ScrollView corner when you connect to a game that doesn't already load the mapper. You can invoke the mapper from that button.

* The mapper will automatically enter edit mode if your game is in early stages of mapping (less than 10 rooms). You will also be dropped into the first room, even if the game is not yet sending location info in a way that the mapper can understand.

* If you select "Upload room data", you will see a working example of what format the data needs to be in.

Registered game admins will be automatically creating a map that all their players can access (for that to happen, they need to edit their main script to load the mapper on app load). Registered portal users will be creating a map saved under their own username. Then they can contact a game admin to have the map installed as default.

For more details, click on the image below. If you have mapper-specific questions, use the thread on the destination page.
